Family History

Our lives on camera

You are already filming your family history

A lot of our family history is a constant work in progress. You are continually taking photographs and video, whether they are on mobile phones or cameras. The memories that you capture, whether you are aware of it or not, is contributing to your family history records. Given the opportunity, what would you do with all that media? We decided to make a short film about the importance of cameras in our lives. Without them, we would not be able to capture those moments that become the best memories of our lives.

This short film was made from video footage in our family history archive. Much of it was captured on Cine 8mm film from the 1960’s and the rest was recorded on various consumer video camcorders. The photographs come from our digital family photo album and contains over 16,000 images, some date back as far as the 1890’s. When starting your own catalogues, the key is to organise the media in a way that it can be easily backed up and to sort everything in date order. This simple advice will enable you to grow your family history records without it becoming a huge and impossible task.

The big question is… What do you do with all that material? We think that telling a larger story in the backdrop of your old photographs and video footage reveals a few opportunities not to be missed. We can make anything from a film that is thought provoking to a film that is entertaining. We believe its better to have those memories alive in a form that you can share and enjoy with others.
